No matter how solid your business plan, approach to the niche, or exciting the products you plan on selling, you’re bound for mediocre results if you don’t spend the time researching the market. Executing market research takes time and effort, and it’s not the most exciting process in the world, but bypassing it will be detrimental to your business.
The reason most people bypass this step is because they aren’t sure where to start.
A few things to consider when gearing up to start your own business.
What do you want to sell?
The first question you need to ask yourself when brainstorming your business options is “what do I want to sell?” This will provide you with an opportunity to explore. Come up with a few different ideas and try to explore several different industires.
For example, explore the idea of selling crossbows (hunting), garden equipment (home improvement), and grilling equipment (cooking). This gives you three different niches to explore within three different industries, which will enhance your chances of finding a niche with excellent potential.
Is the Niche Competitive
Let’s face it — every niche is competitive, but some are more so than others. For example, the computer niche is going to be super-competitive due to the marketing efforts from Apple and PC companies, so it’s probably a better idea to target something a little less competitive.
That said, a super-competitive niche shouldn’t stop you from pursuing your niche if you know it’s what you want to do. The more competitive the niche, the more you need to work — that seems to be key for a lot of people. Every niche will require work — businesses don’t run themselves — but some will require less effort than others.
There are a few techniques to discovering how competitive your niche is, but we’ll cover that throughout the blog over time. Learn more about how Home Base can help you with market research.
